the mothers' group i go to hosted a craft exchange for christmas today, and it was such a great idea! every woman made six of something to give away, like jarred cookie mix, candles, note cards, or candy. one of everything was taken to assemble nice gift bags for all the children's teachers, and the rest of the items were displayed up front. someone called people up based on birthday month, etc., and we took turns picking one thing at a time.
no one had to worry about buying gifts for anyone, and every teacher and mom went home with the beautiful homemade food and crafts she liked best. if my camera weren't still missing (booo), i'd show you the gorgeous flower arrangement or lovely tree ornament i picked made from cinnamon and applesauce(!) with a picture of mary and jesus decoupaged to it. (i know, it sounds ridiculous, but it's awesome, and i'm totally filing the idea away for the future.) i also received homemade applesauce, brownie mix, and fudge:) i think the goodies i went home with put to shame the little magnet-backed picture frames i brought!

What a fabulous idea! While I dream of being crafty, the actual practice of sewing, baking and constructing is always far more challenging than I anticipate. Still, if I knew that I was limited to just one project and then could exchange with others, it would be a huge relief. Thanks for sharing your great tip on Thrifty Green Thursday!

That's something I would have loved to see! I love handmade things. The small wooden box on which you wood-burned verses of Psalm 46 for your Father and me is one of my most cherished possessions and a tiny little paper box you made [ I wish I could figure out how] as a child, I treasure till this day. It's only an inch and a half square, made with wrapping paper or a light weight Christmas card, but you artfully centered the baby Jesus on a bed of straw in a woodland setting watched over by a dear little faun and tiny lamb. The wrap around lid fits perfectly over the bottom of the box. To me a marvel of design and a gift of love.
That does sound like fun. I am going to file away this idea for next year. (I think it's too late for this year for me!)

Wouldn't it be great if we could go through life not being worried if we were good enough! I am sure your frames were very appreciated.
it's funny that you should say that. as we were starting the craft exchange, the person in charge would hold up an item so that whoever made it could explain what it was, and i would say a full four our of five women started their sentence with "it's just..." cookie mix/ an ornament/ etc, completely downplaying their efforts and creativity! it struck me that a man would probably never do what almost every woman did.
(i consciously did not do that...but, mine really weren't all that spectacular cuz i kind of cheated! i bought pretty little frames at micheal already assembled, and all i did was write in a scripture verse. next time, 100% homemade and no apologies!)
