has anyone in this family ever SEEN a chicken?

jim finished building a coop last week, we got four chickens from generous friends at church yesterday, and today, fresh eggs!  dylan is beside herself with excitement.  sydney (our dog), is less of a fan; she wants to, in jim's words, "eat their face."

i never in a million years thought we would have chickens.  even though we've lived here five(!) years, i'm not a country girl.  if anything, i'm a recovering suburbanite with a heart for the city.  how did this happen?

well, regardless, i'm thankful for the space and grass to pasture hens and for fresh eggs from right in our backyard.

if the title of this post makes you nostalgic for arrested development, here's a little something for you:

What plans did you use? We want to build our coop this weekend, but the hubs is squeamish about building without a blueprint. Your chickens are pretty cute!

yay for fresh eggs!!! I'm tempted but not quite convinced about chickens in suburbia. Our yard isn't fully fenced for one thing. But they do make lovely eggs. Are you going to let them free range a bit? They can help keep the bugs down in the garden.

yes, once they are a bit more settled, we do plan to let them out, at least when we're at home and outside. we just don't want an hawk or a cayote (or, um, our dog) to get to them!

we thought we'd put them in the garden at the end of the season to turn things over and fertilize--but if we let them in sooner, wouldn't they eat the plants, too? that we don't want...

I am also a suburbanite with strong urban leanings, but I find myself living in a rural area where chicken coops abound. The idea of fresh eggs is definitely alluring - there's nothing like seeing a yolk from a freshly hatched egg - but I'm not sure I have the expertise to be a parent to chickens and kids all at once. ;)

Oh, I love it!!! I'd love to have a couple chickens, for so many reasons but I love that they eat ticks, big problem here.
Thank you for the link to those felt counting fish. They are so adorable. I want to make some when I get the chance.
