i had one of those "terrible mom" experiences today, like the time i went to unbuckle tiny baby dylan from her car seat after a long trip only to discover that she was already unbuckled. like that, but worse.
jim was teaching a wilderness first aid class today, and i was supposed to teach sunday school for a friend, so i had to get dylan and myself ready extra early by myself. we were just barely going to make it to church on time when i realized that all four doors of my car were frozen shut. awesome.
i wrestled with the doors for a while, holding dylan and trying not to slip on the icy ground. then i took her inside and called the church to let them know i'd be a little late. i closed up the desk, the bathroom door, and the baby gate to the kitchen, sat her down with her toys, and went back out to try again. i was finally able to get a back door open and after climbing over onto the front seat, got that one open, too. i started the car, went back into the house, opened the baby gate, and dylan wasn't there.
that's because she had climbed up the entire flight of stairs by herself and was hanging out alone in the upstairs bathroom. how could i forget to put up that most important stair gate? my morning (my whole life!) could have been so much worse, i can't even think about it.
i am so deeply, indescribably thankful for guardian angels today.
please tell me i'm not the only idiot out there.

Nope, definately not alone! I've had way too many moments like that! Reminds me of when my almost 2 year old locked me out of the house while she was all alone with my new born laying on the floor! ACK! God protected them too, amazingly, the only thing Maddie did was take off both of their socks! God is full of mercy!!!
Well, it reminds me of the time you climbed up the pulldown attic stairs when you were Dylan's age, perhaps a bit younger. Your mom and I were right there, but had our backs turned for just a minute or so.
Don't be too hard on yourself.
Dad
You are definitely not alone. We live in a three story, 200 year old farmhouse with our bedroom on the third floor. A couple of months ago, I had run upstairs to get something and before I knew it, Sydney and Georgia had come all the way up two flights of stairs. "Don't worry," Georgia (4) told me, "I can catch her."
Hi Suzannah,
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
No you're not alone. I'm sure we all have had our oopsie moments. Praising God that it had a happy - and probably some day funny - ending... :)

I concur. You are NOT alone. I had done the SAME thing with the car seat. And just a couple of weekends ago, had somewhat similar stair incident, only the other way around:

And I agree - angels are among us, praise the LORD!
here's my idiotmom moment from YESTERDAY! so tessa, being 16 months old yesterday, should not have been standing on the kitchen chair in the first place. obviously. but she was. and she fell backwards- hitting her head first on the hardwood floor. worst sound ever.
she had a CT SCAN and it came back fine, thank GOD!!!
i still can't remember what was so important that i had walked away from her.
Remind me to tell you about the time my mom dislocated my wrist. And the time I went to the grocery store by myself when I was two. Maybe climbing the stairs alone won't be that bad.
thank you all for helping me remember that we're all human, we make mistakes, and we're doing the best we can:) love you all for your confessions, comments, and reassurances!
