on green gift wrap, baseball bats, and british exports

while i love the idea of the make-your-own gift bags i saw posted about on the internet over the holidays, my modest crafting abilities do not extend to the sewing realm. the last thing i sewed was a actual-size baseball bat pillow in my eighth grade "teen living" class. i got a "c."

(our home-ec was inexplicably called that. if we learned to cook something there, i don't recall. i do remember that our teacher admitted to not owning an oven and doing all her personal home cooking in a microwave. mmmmm. her version of teen living involved the aforementioned bat pillows and making us watch a british hygiene cartoon entitled "some of your bits ain't nice!" my actual teen life involved a lot more flannel, "alternative" music, and being scolded for too much giggling.)

but about the gift bags...my sister tiffany (who is not only crafty but exceedingly creative) had a great reusable gift bag idea that even a non-seamstress like me can copy. you know how almost every store is selling their own inexpensive reusable shopping bags? she bought this little pretty (at forever 21, i think), and turned in into a lovely gift bag. i've already used it running errands twice. thanks, tiff!

I love it that these kinds of bags are so accessible now. I've amassed quite a collection by now, but loving having enough to do all of my shopping and then some. I say you could never have too many :-)

Isn't sewing incredibly hard? I received a sewing machine for Christmas and spend an entire day making unshapely pillow covers. What an incredible frustration! This bag is a good example of how it's sometimes easier and cheaper to buy than to make! Thanks so much for sharing your insights with us this Thrifty Green Thursday!

that's really true--there are so many plain bags available that with a little creativity can be decorated! I love the story about your home ec teacher!

That is a cute bag. Some of those bags sell for a fortune in the stores. Good for your sister!

Trust me I understand feeling completely uncreative and crafty. The stool that I did for the kids for Christmas really challenged my abilities. Great idea though.

Wow, that teen living class sounds very . . . educational. You should look around for that video on U-Tube.

I like the idea of using the nice reusable bags for gifts. I don't make any gift bags, either. You can wrap gifts in fabric instead of paper. No sewing required!

Thanks for joining our Thrifty Green Thursday blog carnival!

I was invited to a friend's house for lunch and wanted to take a little something. I had a bag of fancy chocolate, but it didn't look like all that. I put it in a blue and white fabric bag that I folded smaller and tied with a gold bow. It looked so cute and the hostess was delighted opening it and looked forward to taking it shopping. That home-ec class was pitiful!
